Why is it important to check early?
As developmental disabilities have early-onset and the resulting lifetime of dependence, they impose huge personal, societal, and economic consequences. Early detection and intervention can help prevent the onset of numerous related disabilities, as well as lessen the impact on their family. Early detection not only improves a child’s ability to achieve academic goals but also prevents the development of low self-esteem and behavioural issues, which further hinder their ability to learn.
What should I do, if my child has such problems?
If your child encounters such difficulties, the first thing to do is to consult an expert. Consulting with a pediatrician, a general medicine practitioner, a psychologist or a psychologist, according to the nature of the difficulty, will help in understanding more about the problem. It will also help in arriving at a solution and a possible course of action, if required.
In any case, it is important that as a parent or the care-giver, one shouldn’t panic unnecessarily or get into denial mode. The best interest of the child will be for parents to acknowledge and accept the reality, and undertake appropriate steps to overcome the problems.
